Tempted by the Fruit of Another

Over the winter, I purchased the Garmin 405.

I got a $50 rebate, so I snagged the watch for a price, and I have been enjoying the watch for the past few months. I particularly enjoy the wireless uploading of my workouts. The touch bezel on the watch is a handy way to navigate settings while stationary, less convenient while running.

BUT.....

With my recent interest in triathlons, I have been looking for a way to track distance while swimming (both in the pool and in open water). Mel told me about a TIMEX watch that could track laps in a pool, or you could use Leana method of tucking your Garmin in a baggie under your swim cap for open water. Less than ideal situations.

Enter Garmin 310XT

Downright sexy isn't it? Here is a description:

Finally, a GPS-enabled training device that isn't afraid of the water. The rugged Forerunner 310XT is the triathlete's indispensable training tool — a GPS-enabled, swim-proof trainer that tracks bike and run data and sends it wirelessly to your computer. This multi-sport device has up to 20 hours of battery life, tracks distance, pace and heart rate (optional), and goes from wrist to bike in seconds.

Just what I was looking for. One snag? The price tag $449 Canadian dollars!!

Then I got to thinking, maybe I could sell my 405, and put the proceeds towards a new 310XT. Does anyone know a good runners buy/sell site? I have no experience selling stuff on the web. Also has anyone tried the 310XT? Is it worth the cost? It is pretty new in Canada, but maybe its been around in the US for longer.

Thanks for reading! P.S - There are still a few items up for bid at Natalie cancer fundraising bake sale. Congrats to Angelea from cabin fever feast, she was the winning bid on the caramel tart. I will bake that and send it to you right away!

I'm not super crazy about the square shape (my reason for not getting the 305), but the orange is pretty darn sexy. Tough call...

i was looking at it too, but had picked up an expensive Polar earlier in the winter too for my focus on heart rate. Now that my focus has changed to tri too, i was eyeing it up. I may decide to sell my Polar too, and have the $$ go towards the new Garmin, but am so undecided. Gah. I want to read more reviews about it first. So hard once you get one gadget to be satisfied eh?

Hmm... you could do ebay right? I was just thinking of getting a garmin. How much is that 405 one?
I don't know anything about the 310.

eBay? Or maybe a forum Runner's World or maybe even Twitter?

I would get one for the orange color alone. :)

I have been drooling over that new model since seeing it at the Boston Marathon expo. I'm secretly hoping my 205 will die soon so I can buy it. :)

Good luck selling your 405! Sorry, I don't know of any running-specific buy/seel sites, but there's always Craigslist of Kijiji.

wow that's actually cheaper than I thought that garmin was going for right now. Glad I'm nto ready for a tri yet, they just seem so much more expensive!

A 405... I'm so jealous and am now thinking again about getting one.

I saw that one too and have a serious case of gadget envy. I've been hoping my current watch would give out but so far it's hanging on.

If you want to sell locally I'd suggest craigslist. If you don't mind shipping you probably will get a better price from eBay. Another thing you can do is post on local runner's groups or put posters at local running/sports stores bulletin boards.

I love the 405, but I have no plans to do a tri.
Maybe check the runners world forums. They might have a place you can post that you want to sell the 405.

I just saw the new garmin the other day ... I want one and don't even do tris!

Selling it is a great idea ... Kijiji!

Cool watches. I'd definitely get an XT before putting my Garmin in a swim cap. The swim caps are already pretty dorky let alone with a watch stuck up under it. And racing is all about fashion, as we know.

My girlfriend has a 310XT on backorder right now. She's hoping to get it in time for IMLouisville at the end of August. I have heard (like with many things) that there have been some technical issues with the 'first run' of them. Maybe wait until a birthday or Christmas - let them get the kinks out.

Since you are interested in triathlons I think the 310 upgrade makes perfect sense.

I on the other hand am not ever going to swim in open water ever again so for me it is a pure cosmetic upgrade from my 305 (one I really, really want to make!).

I have heard it has a vibrate function which is cool for when you wear an ipod or during a race when 50 other Garmins beep at the same time.

I cheated on my 305 this weekend and tried on the 310. It is great!

I so want one also due to getting into tri's. The only thing that bothers me is the fact that the 310 has been having issues. I think I'm going to wait until they put out a software patch before I seriously think about it.

That one looks cool. I'm one of the weirdos who actually like the 305 though (and i'll never need one for swimming).

Hope you get to have one!
