Recovery

Thanks everyone for your nice messages about my Steamtown race result.  It definately turned out to be more than a training run.

I am working on my Steamtown Report,  but unfortunately got a little cold post marathon sniffles that leaves me napping on the couch after work.  I hope it doesn't hold on, I want to do some speedwork in preparation for the Hamilton Road to Hope marathon November 1st!! I am also thinking of running a half marathon this weekend in Toronto.  I have some goals for that race,  Hamilton, and then CIM the next month.

Tonight I am meeting a friend for Hot Yoga, which is my favourite post race recovery activity,  which brings me to the topic of this post

What is your post-race recovery routine?

Here is what works for me
-Epsom Salt baths (eucalyptus)
-Massage
-Extra Sleep
-Herbal tea
-Potato chips (seriously)
-Hot Yoga

So what do you do?

Potato Chips!!! The Cheetos I had after my first Marathon tasted like heaven.

Hubby gives me massages, he is a saint.

Thanks for your comment today. I am pretty darn sure I wont be able to be a bandit...I would be too stressed.. Someday maybe I will consider being a pacer...but gotta get a few races under my belt first.

Lots of fun races for you coming up!!

Do Epsom Salts come in different varieties? Eucalyptus sounds like a heavenly recovery bath!

I love recovery massages, but not as much as a solid uninterrupted NAP :)

Honestly? A cup of coffee, a shower, and then it's back to being "mom". If I'm lucky, I might remember to grab something to eat. That's why I've only run one marathon LOL. I'm fairly useless after a half, but still need to keep up with my boys. My boys would have starved after the marathon if my mom hadn't been here.

Well, as you could see - with my races, there's food everywhere so when I'm done I usually just need some Advil and more water. But chips, M&M's, bananas, etc., I just eat while I'm running. LOL

Hot bath, epsom salts, masaage, mexican food and a cold beer.

Sorry about the cold!

I like to stuff my face, and then, if my child cooperates, a nap! Otherwise it's "active" recovery chasing around a toddler. :)

Epsom salt baths are key for me. And wine.... lots of wine. Not sure there's any benefit to the latter. ;)

Looking forward to reading your report!

I'll be cheering/spectating at Toronto this weekend as many from my clinic are running. I'll watch for you!

Potato chips for sure. Or anything carby and not-so-good-for you. LOL!

Potato chips ... love it ... actually scientifically speaking they would replace some much needed sodium!

I am planning a sausage and egg mcmuffin breakfast for my recovery.

Sleep. That's definitely my numero uno!

I "do" chips too after a run...then a nap!

15 min ice water bath. It's not pleasant but my recovery time after running marathons is usually only a 2-3 days since I started doing them. I also like to walk around for 30 min to an hour a few hours later to get the blood flowing again. Doing this I can and have run marathons 1-2 weeks apart fairly well.

Hope you get over the cold soon!

haha on the chips! I try to do an ice bath, eat lots of protein, get a massage via husband and use bar thing on body, and do yoga the next day! great job at steamtown.

Simple. Eat as little as possible for as long as possible. Stretch and drink water till it feels like you're drowning.
Meantime, I thought you might be interested in reading this piece about a sportscaster who's work has been transformed by becoming a marathoner:
