Wednesday Ramblings

Happy Hump Day!!! Thanks for all the comments about my triathlon. I will post pictures soon (maybe for Foto Friday).

Some Wednesday Ramblings;

Random Rambling #1 - Pasta alternatives

Yesterday I made a really delicious dish that is a great alternate to pasta, Spaghetti Squash Alfredo. I am trying to add more variety to my diet, and this squash will definitely be incorporated into my diet. For the recipe, or how to prepare spaghetti squash, click here. Amanda at Run to the Finish also posted some pasta alternatives on her blog yesterday.

Random Rambling #2 - Seeking a Running/Triathlon/Nutrition Coach

I am having a hard time juggling training for my half iron distance triathlon and Full marathon at the same time. My running has taken a little bit of a back seat in terms of the distances I need to be completing to obtain a PR at St. George in October. I am still going to run St. George, but I am thinking that my goal marathon will likely be the Road to Hope Marathon I ran last November.

I think I am spinning my wheels lately, and like I really could use a coach to help me get the most out of my workouts. This triathlon stuff is so new and I would like some guidance to take me from now to the end of this year.

The trouble is, I have no clue how to look for or find a coach, so any suggestions would be helpful. I don't want a generic e-mailed program, I need a more of a tailored program with continual feedback and adjustment based on workouts completed. I am thinking I need someone to offer nutritional advice as well. I have no idea if this is realistic, or what this might cost.

Random Rambling #3 - Bikers Beware!

This article was on the Nacho website this morning, and I thought it may be important for us triathletes to read.

Welcome to Slowtwitch.com - Kentucky triathlete killed by hit-and-run driver Written by: Timothy CarlsonDate: Sat Aug 01 2009

A Kentucky man participating in a sprint triathlon in Louisville, Kentucky was struck and killed this morning by a hit-and-run driver, according to the Louisville Courier-Journal.
Police charged Kenneth Yates, 25, of Louisville with murder, drunk driving and assault on a police officer, according to Louisville Metro Police spokeswoman Alicia Smiley. Police stated that Yates was drunk and driving at high speed when he hit John Carr, 47, of near by Owenton, Kentucky, about 8 a.m.
Carr was riding in the cycling leg of a sprint triathlon at E.P. 'Tom' Sawyer State Park when he was hit from behind. Louisville Metro Police said that Yates continued driving with Carr’s bicycle still on his windshield until he was stopped by an off-duty police officer directing traffic for the triathlon.
According to police, Yates fled on foot to a nearby house until he was brought back to the scene by his mother.
The Courier-Journal cited a Jefferson County Deputy Coroner who said that Carr was pronounced dead at the scene of blunt force trauma. Louisville Metro Police spokeswoman Smiley said Yates resisted arrest, which prompted the additional assault charge.
The 28th annual edition of the E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park Triathlon was a USA Triathlon sanctioned event consisting of a half mile swim, 14-mile bike and a 5k run held on park grounds and surrounding roads.

Will the spaghetti squash alfredo be used as pre-race feed as well, or will you stick to pasta for that?

I barely touch pasta most of the time, but I give in and go for it the night or two before a race.

I've used squash instead of noodles when I have marinara, it's really good too. Especially with parmesan cheese on top. Yummmmmmy!

I don't have too much help on this, but I read amanda's post yesterday and think spaghetti squash sounds delish!!! : ) Also it is a great idea for a coach!! (not sure how to find one though)

Some days I wish I had a coach and I am not even training for the distances you are!

Yum, I love spaghetti squash instead of pasta. Must remember to buy it more often...

No advice on the coach. I'm not even training these days.

You are making me hungry!!

Good luck with the coach hunt. My first experience with a coach wasn't so good, but my second was. You need to find one that works with your style and that understands your priorities/needs. Good luck. I'd suggest asking around - people at races, running store, etc and you're sure to find someone

That squash recipe sounds delish!

good luck finding the coach...even though i'm not training for the same distances, i'm also having a hard time with training for the half at the same time as the triathlons... just not enough hours in a day, and want to make sure i don't overtrain. Hope it works out! I read that article.... so sad.

I discovered spaghetti squash last winter. Love it! I haven't had it for months, but I think I'll try that recipe. Thanks for sharing!

Good luck finding a coach. I would LOVE to have one, and I think I would definitely need one if I ever attempted triathlon. It must be so hard to juggle the disciplines.

yummm i have been wanting to try the squash instead of noodles thing, i will have to now!!

good luck finding a coach... i have no suggestions but sounds like its just what you will need! its crazy trying to imagine all those other things to train for ON TOP of training for a marathon :) makes me tired!

I haven't tried the specific plans, but I've read "Training Plans for Multi-sport Athletes", and it's good. Keep me updated since I have half IM on the brain these days. :o)

I will have to find a coach too if I decide I like triathlons.

I find M-Rah from http://mrah-veggingout.blogspot.com/ very good at answering questions on her Stump the trainer Sundays not sure if she offers professional one on one training but I really like the way she answered my questions on her last Stump session.

Thanks for the website. After a quick review I rethought my post a little.. HILLS??? I do not like hills..

I love Spagetti squash..

That story is SAD!!!

Lacey Nicole said...

i love spaghetti squash!!! i have only actually made it once though but that's because i never see it at the grocery store. time to start looking!!! thanks for the reminder :)

what distances do you need to be doing for your goal marathon?? do you follow a plan or your own guidelines? i'm worried about acclimating to the distance. i feel like i need to run a few 20+ runs just to get used to it. currently it just feels so hard!!!!!

My coach Angie also trains people via e-mail. Her programs aren't generic at all, she takes the amount of time you have into account along with what you are training for and your goals. She can help a bit on the nutrition side, but only a bit since she isn't a registered dietician. You can check out her web page here:
http://www.teamtrilife.com/index.html
She has had a lot of luck with her e-coaching athletes. She charges $150/month + gst.
If you want someone local you can start by scouring the ontario tri association to find different teams and coaches. Contact a few to see if anyone is a good fit.

Love spaghetti squash as an alternative, so good!

I'm with you on the coach - mine is a real live person that I meet with face to face at least every other week AND run into him at the pool regularly. I would get some local peeps with good experiences to help on that quest. Nothing beats a good coach.

I'd be too hard to choose, so I'd have both -maybe just not in one sitting. :)

I have another Cyclist Attacked! horror story to tell on Friday. And you are still wanting a coach with random thought #2? Glutton.

I love spag. squash! So good.

I had a guest post on my site a while ago from Dr. Susan Kleiner, who is a sports nutritionist. She does consulting but I don't know how much it costs or anything like that. If you want to check her out, her web site is: www.powereating.com

She's doing another post for me soon on fueling for fall races.

Good luck!

Hi M - The spaghetti squash alfredo looks too good. Thanks for bring this up.

Like you, I am reading tons of stuff about triathlons. I am learning.

I have to admit that I am freaking out about the bike thing. I am more comfortable with my running since I am used to my surroundings. I did go for my first bike ride last Sunday and I was petrified. I am not used to the quick pace setting surrounding thing. People are driving too fast these days and I am scare to death that I might get hit by a car someday.

Why is it in training for the Tri's one of the three always seems to get neglected?

The RR in Aurora has an amazing Tri clinic. Unfortunatly.....it is over with now :( But keep it in mind for next year!

Hi Marci

I can't imagine trying to train for a marathon and a triathlon at the same time. I almost think you have to prioritize one or the other to be truly succesful. You might just get that PR at St. George anway...

Take care and best of luck with your training. And be safe.

What a great web log. I spend hours on the net reading blogs, about tons of various subjects. I have to first of all give praise to whoever created your theme and second of all to you for writing what i can only describe as an fabulous article. I honestly believe there is a skill to writing articles that only very few posses and honestly you got it. The combining of demonstrative and upper-class content is by all odds super rare with the astronomic amount of blogs on the cyberspace.
