Update on Hubs

Thanks for the message about Hubs and thankfully his test came back negative on a blood clot in his leg. Having a scare about someone you love really puts things into perspective. Bad as the global economy is now, health is still the most important thing, and us as a running community are doing the right thing to keep ourselves healthy.

Hubs will still have to do more tests to look into the Baker's cyst, but his doctor said he can run as long as there is no pain (none now), and he should ice and elevate to help shrink the cyst and jeep it under control.

I also had my own mini health scare this weekend. I just got back from a visit with my doctor to discuss some blood work I had done in the summer. Yes, you read that right. The blood work was done in August as part of my annual physical. I was super annoyed/worried when I picked up a phone message at 4pm this past Friday to call my doctors office to discuss my test results. I had long since put the blood work I had done in August out of my mind, because I assumed, if anythings wrong they will call. They did, SIX months later, and on a Friday afternoon, so I had to wait and worry all weekend to get an appointment (today).

When I arrived at my doctors office the medical secretary said that they had called me four times over the past few months. I smiled politely and informed them that I never received any message, thinking in the back of my mind if this is serious, I will sue your pants off, so don't feed me a line of doo-doo to CYA!!

Thankfully it was not serious. Apparently I have borderline low iron levels. Not shocking I suppose since I don't eat red meat or pork, but does explain why I feel lethargic at times. Does anyone else have low iron? Is it common amoungst runners? Anyway, I am now on prescription iron pills.

I hope everyone is having a good week. Its Friday tomorrow and its a long weekend in Ontario, Family Day is Monday!! Woo Hoo! Thanks for reading

  1. My husband has had borderline low iron at times. The good news is that is very treatable with iron supplements or diet change. You'll probably notice an improvement in your energy right away.

But seriously, they waited THIS LONG to contact you about that?!? What's up with that?!?!?

  2. That's a little scary that they just got in touch with you. Geesh, thankfully it wasn't anything too serious.

  3. that's so frustrating that it took so long! I am also low iron, don't eat a lot of red meat either... but being a woman apparently a little more common. Iron supplements were hard on my stomach

  4. i can;t believe it took that long for them to tell you that...sheesh. well, i'm glad that both scares turned out to be ok.

  5. I don't have low iron, but a friend of mine does and she takes an iron supplement. Downside to that is that it causes constipation.

Glad your hubs' test was negative on the blood clot!

  6. Glad both of the health scares turned out to be fairly minor.

I had low iron while pregnant, but don't seem to be having any problems now. One way you can get your iron levels up without supplementation is to cook in cast iron pans.

  7. To add to Jess' comment . . and it gives you green (or sometimes black) poop!

I'm glad that everything is ok :-)

  8. Hi Marci,

Glad to hear everything turned out well. Low iron levels is very common actually, especially in women. It causes mild fatigue which is often not noticeable. Luckily it is very treatable.

    Have a good weekend.

  9. Awesome news about hubs!

I have always heard that low iron is extremely common in runners, especially women. Are you going to be taking a supplement?

(And I would be seriously pissed that they waited SIX MONTHS to call! Wth!)

  10. Try your hardest to get iron through your regular diet instead of having to take supplements. you don't want to be constipated. :o|

  12. Marci, so glad to hear that it is nothing quite as serious as a blood clot with the hubs. And for you too! Sheesh, they should have done a better job trying to get in touch with you. The same thing happened to my friend - didn't get a call back for ages, then couldn't get an appointment for ages, and all for slightly low iron.

  13. I'm glad things are okay for both of you. Can't believe it took the clinic that long to call . . . and then to say they'd been trying to call? Hope you have a good long weekend.

  15. I'm glad to hear the good news about hubs' cyst and that he's not in pain now.

Let us know if you see any difference in your running with the iron supplements-- there was an article I believe on the RW site about how low iron can subtly worsen running performance, although you've been so speedy lately I can't imagine that being true!

  16. glad the news is good on the health front. i don't think "4 times" in the past 5+ months is much of an effort! so glad it was nothing serious.

  17. Marci, don't worry I'm keeping track of everyone, just email me your time when you finish the 5k! :) And hope that you are feeling better and glad it wasn't anything serious for either of you.

  18. I think I'm also low on iron. Either that or I'm just lazy :)

Try not to have any calcium products (milk/cheese/etc.) when you take your iron - the iron won't absorb as well.

  19. One of the main reasons for the recent rise in medical tourism is inadequate coverage of the medical insurance plans in effect in US. The cost for health insurance is very high in US and other developed countries. Besides, medical insurance does not cover quite a few types of surgeries and medical procedures. The public health service systems are sometimes unable to provide quick service especially when it comes to non-urgent medical services. Under such circumstances patients consider medical tourism as a lucrative option. Visit here to know more about the tourism in Asia http://www.asiasmedicaltourism.com/
