Storm

Its been a busy few days and I'm happy to report I am back running with no ITB pain. I have slowly ramped up the mileage this week and everything seems fine. The new shoes are taking some breaking in, but I think they are OK. I miss my Saucony Paramounts though, so I think I will buy a second pair of those. I ran a very slow recovery driven (although it didn't feel recovery like) 22K with a running friend this morning. Although the Sun was shining and we were running very slow, I had moments of Vertigo. Weird. I don't know what caused it. I feel fine now, so I don't think I am sick. I have been short on sleep this week so maybe that's it. It was also my first non-track/treadmill run in a few weeks.

The plan when I got home was to take an ice bath (Aron, you inspired me), but I wussed out and had a hot eucalyptus Epsom salt bath instead. Meh. Next time I guess. It's hard to want to jump into ice when you've just been running in it.

You may wonder why I ran 22K the day before a race. I ultimately decided that this half marathon tomorrow isn't an 'A' race, so I want to make sure I get at least 40 miles in this week to prepare for Shamrock, my goal race. I also have another half marathon the following weekend, so I thought it might be interesting to see how my body races without tapering. And I made sure I ran slow, so I think I could still have a decent run, maybe not a PB, but a solid tempo-ish run.

Great plan, right?

One teeeennnny problem, there is a snow storm that started early this evening and its supposed to go into the afternoon tomorrow. About a 10-15cm dumping of snow is expected. I hate running on snowy roads, and I don't want to risk injury, so I might have to really scale it back tomorrow. Its also an hour and a half drive to the race, so if the roads are really bad, I may not run it. I hate to throw away that race entry fee, but that's a gamble you take when you register for a winter race. Maybe it won't be so bad. The snow is melting as it hits the pavement now, so I will reassess in the am. Fingers crossed. I could care less about the cold, but I don't like running (fast) on slick roads.

I hope you are all having a great weekend. I need to catch on blog comments, I have been sneaking some reads with little chance to comment. Thanks for reading

  2. If you end up NOT doing the race tomorrow due to the storm, you'll be really glad you did the 22K today.

Anyway I think if it's not an A race, no issue training right through it.

I hope the weather cooperates and you can do the race tomorrow anyway!

  3. Hope you get to do the race tomorrow. The weather man is usually wrong, right?

And my confirmation comment word is 'racederg'. I take that as a good sign for the race. :)

  7. Good luck tomorrow if you make it. My hub is running the 5km and a bunch of people in our group is racing tomorrow as well. It is snowy here (Burlington) but not really stormy per se. Grimsby is a whole other thing though....

I could never do the ice baths, even though i trained in the summer. I'm just too wussy about being cold LOL.

Hope the weather isn't too bad and you get to race tomorrow!

  9. glad to hear there was no ITB pain on your run!! I think it was a good idea to have a 22K under your belt today, in the event of not getting to the half tomorrow! Good luck if you go though!

  10. I've heard on a few blogs that the snow will come. 22K today makes it all better. I do admire you for running that distance before a race, whoa...
Glad that the ITB is feeling better. I always feel bad when I here about injuries. Because we are all one step away from accidently having one. Good luck tomorrow on your warm-up race!

  11. Hot eucalyptus sounds MUCH nicer than ice. I don't blame you one bit. LOL
Good luck tomorrow, if you end up running. Snowy roads don't sound fun to run on/in.

  14. So glad your ITB's being good!

For the vertigo - were you dehydrated? That's usually when I know I'm on the dry side.

  21. Hope you ran well in your race today, dd it go well?

Concerning ice baths, I read and heard that recovery socks w heat is more important in cold weather and ice baths are more important in hot weather...so I think you're okay on that front.

I'm not so sure about the vertigo though. If it is a recurring thing, might want to get it checked out.
