**Preface- Sorry this is not a typical race report, although I did complete the race.**
Yesterday I went out yesterday with the full intention of running a 13 miler, with the last three miles being a progression for the FFFK.
I set out at my goal marathon race pace, planned on holding that pace and then speeding up for the last three miles. I was a bit hesitant when I started out. My knees have been bothering me a bit when I run, and I think its because (well I'm 99% sure its because) I need new shoes. In typical procrastinator Marci fashion I wait until I **need** shoes, and of course they are out of the highly coveted 7.5 shoe size at my local Running Room. I ordered a new pair in, they were supposed to come in within 3 days-1 week, but they still hadn't come in last week (I think there was a screw up along the way). I called last week and they said they should be in by this week (they weren't).
I typically wear Saucony Progrid Paramounts, but I have in the past worn Asics Gel Kaynos, so I should have just bought the Kayanos they had in stock right? Wrong, I decided to be cheap and wait for the Saucony's which still haven't come in.
So back to my run. As I am running the bottom of my feet feel sore, and I can feel my knees. Not good signs, so I stopped right? Wrong. Kept going, at finally just after 8.5K I felt a twinge in my IT band. I stopped running dead then. Why do I press my stttuppppid button when I start running!!!??!! Of course if I run in dead shoes I will get injured. My IT band is still sore this morning despite efforts to ice and stretch. I am driving to Markham today to buy the shoes there. I don't know if I should try running my 20 miler or not today. Any thoughts people? (Its really hard for me to sit it out).
**Actual race report if you didn't want to read about my stupidity above****
Back to FFFK, I ran 8.52K in 45 min 31 seconds (8:35 pace mi/min or 5:20 k/min) pace. So if I take this average pace, my 5K time would be about 26 minutes. Hubs also ran to support Nancy, he ran 5K in 22 min 12 seconds (his second run back since his cyst was discovered). Go Hubs!!
On a side note, Hubs is becoming really fast. Well, he always was, but he has been laid up with injuries for most of the last year that forced him to slow down. He was just picking up some serious speed before this Bakers cyst thing started. His doctor said go ahead and run, but if any pain happens, surgery may be required. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
Looking forward to reading race reports today. Good luck racers. Thanks for reading!!
Sorry that you had pain during your run, but you still did a great job!!
ReplyDeleteI hope you get yourself some new shoes today and that the ITB pain doesn't persist. I think you know that you *should* sit out the 20-miler, but I would have a hard time with that too. Either way, good luck.
ReplyDeleteAlso, keeping my fingers crossed that hubs does not need surgery!
Sorry about the pain! OUch! Good job on the race though.
ReplyDeleteAm I the only one who always has a new pair of shoes in the wings? I can't resist a good sale, so I always am at least on pair ahead.
hopefully you can get your new shoes, but you did an awesome job on the run too! Congrats to hubs for getting out there and running it two, you are both superstars. Not sure if you ran your 20 today... but hope you're feeling better.
ReplyDeleteGo Hubs!
ReplyDeleteGet those new shoes!! The RIGHT ones for you girl!
Rest and get the shoes. The 20 miler can be done next week without any one dying lol
ReplyDeleteYAY Hubs!!
I do the same thing and try to ignore the pains. Not smart.
ReplyDeleteGreat 5K time for you and Hubs!
oh no!!!! i completely sympathize, and we have the same wait-too-long for shoes problem!!! i went ahead and bought 2 pairs at the same time this time around,... my wallet wasn'\t happy but i'mhoping this will help my body be at its best. pain is so scary b/c you never know what it will turn into. i would see how you feel in your new sneaks hopefully you caught everything early enough. GO HUBS! the bakers cyst sounds really scary go him for running + getting faster despite. i hope he's not in pain!l
ReplyDeleteWow, you don't rotate several pairs of shoes? You should buy a couple of pairs, those suckers last a lot longer if you don't run consecutive days in a pair (Bob Glover says a pair needs 48 hours after running, believe it or not).
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about the pain. Rest and get some new shoes before doing the 20 miler.
ReplyDeleteGreat job on the FFFK! Yieks about the pain. I've never dealt with IT issues so I don't know what to tell you?!
ReplyDeleteHope the ITB feels better. I, too, have a hard time stopping when I hurt... Not sure about the 20 miler tomorrow. I would play it by ear, go out there and see how you feel...but stop if it hurts. rest now would prevent a worse problem there (I know you already knew that..)
ReplyDeleteAna-Maria
Well, I buy my shoes ahead. I have two unused pairs on my shelf. If the ones I'm using now start to break down, I'm ready to switch. That doesn't help for now, but you could plan ahead for the future.
ReplyDeleteThanks for joining in the FFFK! I know that it means a lot to Nancy.
Hope the knee problem is temporary!
ReplyDeleteI run in the Kayano's and love them. I'll spend the extra $$. They are the best shoes I have ever had.
ReplyDeleteNice job on the run, and hope your husband has continued sucess.
it is hard to break down and spend the $80 or so on new shoes every time you need another new pair! i try to put it off but i know i shouldn't. hope the new shoes do the trick, and great job on your 'fffk' race!
ReplyDeleteThat just sounds horrible. I would have hard time coping with that. Good luck
ReplyDeleteExcellent job on the run!
ReplyDeleteYou already know that you should wait until you have proper shoes for the 20 ;)
Hello! I don't make layouts but i'm totally about teaching people how i do it. A friend sent me this email on how to make your own and its VERY easy. I just get 'scrapbook' paper from photobucket and insert the links into the template. If you would like me to email it to ya, shoot me an email and i wouldnt mind helping ya out!! :)
ReplyDeleteI tend to wait to long before I buy new shoes. For example:NOW!
ReplyDeleteYes the hubs is quite the speedster as are you! I have injected and aspirated quite a few of my patients knees due to Bakers cyst's. I usually send them to an orthopedic specialist. They can be painful to say the least.
Sorry to hear about your foot/shoe problems. I wear Asics too and I find that they wear off pretty fast. Funny thing is that I also got a pair of Saucony ProGrid Triumph 5 at the outlet last week and am using them too. I switch off between those two hoping that would help everything last a bit longer. We'll see if it works.
ReplyDeleteHope your new shoes come in soon. I would hold off on the 20 miler. If you are having problems with knees, IT Band, I think it would be better to push it back. You don't want to injury yourself.
ReplyDeleteNice jobto you and your husband on teh runs!
Sorry to hear about the pain. Hope you got your new shoes, but great job on the race!
ReplyDeleteyikes! get those new shoes then do your 20 miler :) i love my keyanos... i have 2 new pairs waiting in my closet right now hehe.
ReplyDeleteHappy to hear that Hubs is getting back to his game face...my wife just had a cyst removed and know how slow it is to recover.
ReplyDeleteI would still try to run the 20-miler, but slower, and stop running when you feel pain...then walk home.
Your recovery runs should be done even slower than normal, what's important is time on your feet, not how fast you run now.
IT band is a pain for sure! I would hold off on the 20 miler and get some new shoes to see if that helps....I procrastinate too when having to get shoes..they are just so dang $$$$
ReplyDeleteI have to go get new shoes too. I wasn't totally happy with my last pair of Brooks Ariels but the idea of gonig in there and having to go through the agony of new runners makes me cringe...
ReplyDeleteStill now that I have foot and knee pain -- I have no choice but to suck it still...
Congrats on the FFFK
