I ran inside the dome (indoor track) tonight for my 10 mile tempo run. I was supposed to run 5 miles at tempo, and the remainder just at regular aerobic pace. I warmed up for about a mile, and then finished my 5 miles in 43:10 (8:38 mi/min or 5:23 km/min) pace, which I felt good about.
Afterwards, I felt kind of lazy and bored with the track yet again (it's -15C/5F outside today) so I ran a one mile cool-down, to total 7 miles, 3 miles short of the 10 miles my training plan called for.
My first instinct of course was to be mad at myself for not getting in those last three miles to total 10. But I stopped myself. I did have a good tempo run, and I can easily make up those miles later in the week. It is just training, a practice run, not the race....
Here is what NBA super star Allen Iverson has to say about "Practice".
So yes I know "Practice" is important, but sometimes it's also important that I don't take myself too seriously.
Hope you are having a great week! Thanks for reading!
Great post Marci! You're so right! Stay warm, i'm glad to read that you didn't run outside tonite! :D
ReplyDeleteTotally right practise! And those 3 miles won'T count on marathon day. You had a great tempo run and that's great!
ReplyDeleteRight on. It was just practice.
ReplyDeleterunning inside a dome? So cool!
ReplyDeleteThat is a hilarious clip! My son showed that to me over Christmas break. Great workout!
ReplyDeleteBrr...so cold! No wonder you are running on an indoor track! Is there also a treadmill near your dome track? Because maybe you could do a portion of your run (warm up or cool down) on the treadmill and the main part on the track - just to beat the boredom.
ReplyDeleteYou're right...don't sweat the 3 miles. You had a good run, and that's all that matters.
ReplyDeleteGood call staying indoors - I froze my EVERYTHING off last night. And it's only getting colder. brrrr!
ReplyDeleteYou are so right about practice. And you got a great run in, even if it was 7 instead of 10.
ReplyDeleteOMG I remember seeing that vid live when it happened. Mr McG was watching it on ESPN2 or something . .wow the things I remember :P
ReplyDeleteHa. The 3 miles weren't a big deal-- "we're talking about PRACTICE, man." ;) You did the 5 at a great tempo pace and that's really the meat of the workout right?
ReplyDeletehal higdon's plan told me to not worry too much about the exact distance for some of the mid-week middle-distance runs, as long as i'm mostly consistent that is what matters. i think you had a GREAT workout! and 3 miles shy of 10 is pretty damn close. i still can't believe you do so much distance on an indoor track. oooh and i was obsessed with allen iverson when he was at georgetown :)
ReplyDeletei totally know what you are going through and dont worry about making up those missed couple miles, especially in these bigger weeks its just too hard. you are doing great and you hit those tempo miles perfect!! those were the important miles, the warm up and cool down are just that.
ReplyDeletewow an indoor track for 7 miles... i dont know if thats better or worse than a treadmill :) you are a champ girlie!
I would have been bored much earlier than the 7 mile marker, so congrats on getting that far!
ReplyDelete"We don't need no stinkin' practice!"
ReplyDeleteOr was that "badges"...
Nice running!
Great job on the tempo run! I am sure you will get the miles in later this week! I agree its hard running on the track! Especially for 10 miles!
ReplyDeleteYou're so lucky to have access to an indoor track!! 7 miles is still excellent, considering. In the grand scheme of things, I don't think it's gonna make a huge difference!
ReplyDeleteRight on.
ReplyDeleteHope you are keeping warm, thank goodness you have an indoor facility close by.
ReplyDeleteYou got the important miles done! I'm jealous of the indoor running option!
ReplyDeleteThanks for dropping by my blog, Marci. And yeah, we're all NOT professionals here, so we don't have to worry about practice! Heehee. We'll make it up tomorrow!
ReplyDeleteHey there! Your speed was great. 5 miles at that pace is impressive. I will definately come out and run with you again (perhaps not at that pace) vcery soon so we can chat about Disney. Let me know when!
ReplyDeleteI think you hit it right on - don't take yourself too seriously :). Awesome job on the workout too!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely! Good job on that tempo run. That's great.
ReplyDeleteHa, I love that video. You are doing so well with the high mileage plan! Congrats!
ReplyDeleteWOW Marci, thanks for your last comment and confirming what i thought... grrr, i knew it. Hope you're staying warm!
ReplyDeleteI hear you. It is really hard to be motivated either inside or outside when it is this freaking cold.
ReplyDeleteDon't beat yourself up and when it is 60 degrees and sunny outside (again!) it will all balance out.
Best of luck.
I'm completely confident that I never take myself to seriously.
ReplyDeleteyou are so right - it's just a training run. you have many weeks to log miles and you have to stay healthy. glad you aren't heading out in the extreme cold, and 7 miles is certainly not shabby at all!
