Catching Up

So I've been MIA the last few days. I have been reading all of your blogs, but I am definitely behind in commenting, so I hope to catch up with you all soon. Part of the reason for my absence is that this silly cold is still hanging on. I was better for awhile but it seems to have resurgences still. Its not as bad as before, but it definitely affects my running.

I am signed up for a 10 miler race next Friday on boxing day and to be 100% honest, I'm not looking forward to it. My original race goal was to try to run the race as though I was running a sub 1:50 half, about 1:24 or 1:25. I don't think this is realistic right now, unfortunately, for a few reasons. My fitness is not there because of my cold. My attempt at tempo run yesterday sent me into a coughing fit. The course has a few major hills, and I never did the hill training I planned to do. It is supposed to be above freezing (although raining) that day. I am thinking about skipping it or perhaps just running a steady pace race. I guess since I've never run a 10 miler, it will be a PR either way. We'll see how it feels closer to race day. Maybe I should just relax and run it for fun. If only I was capable... LOL.

In more positive news, I have narrowed my next marathon down to two choices. Originally I had talked about a family day race, but I want a 12 week training schedule, which starts next week. So I am ready to announce my next marathon plan! Here are the events I am eyeing up (drumroll please...)

1) Little Rock Marathon, Little Rock, Arkansas (March 15th)
Pro's
-great history
-honking huge medal
-lots of crowd support
-great rating at marathon guide
-have the entire week to relax at my sisters after

Con's
-hilly
-can't really think of much else

2) Shamrock Marathon, Virginia Beach, Virginia (March 22nd)
Pro's
-flat course
-looks like fun -many leprechauns on the course
-ocean course
Cons
-wind
-I would have to leave right after to work the next day

The marathon has to be during my March break (March 13th-22nd) and be drivable from my sisters in Nashville. I really want to run both, and I just may. I also looked at the Washington, DC marathon, but I want to run a marathon that counts for 50 states and DC doesn't. Anyway, I welcome your thoughts/opinions on which of these two races to run.

Anyway I hope you are all having a great weekend. I'm off for the next two weeks (woo hoo!)
I also have to tally my BBC points, so look for that in my next post!
Thanks for reading!

Unless the weather is icky and you really don't want to run the 10-miler, why don't you just run to have fun and pretend it's a training day?

Feel better! I hate nagging colds! Did you go to the doctors??

I do hope you feel better.

I wasn't that impressed with Shamrock. (And there was no food at the finish but lots of beer -- that what I get for being slow I guess, yes, that attitude sucks.) The course was flat but not terribly inspired. Honestly, knowing what I know, I go for little rock.

sucks that your cold is still lingering, feel better soon and enjoy your next 2 weeks off! Enjoy the 10 miler. I would have signed up if I was more confident about my legs :) Happy holidays!

I have heardof the 1 lbs medal for Little Rock. Sounds kick ass!

I vote for Little Rock - I have absolutely no reason for picking that one, other than VA is too close to NJ so it just sounds "blah" to me (plus who can pass up a honking big medal?)

Aw, hope you feel better soon. Maybe run the 10 miler just as a training run and don't put any pressure on yourself.

The shamrock marathon sounds awesome!

Sorry to hear that you probably won't be able to reach your goal for the 10-miler, but you're right... it's a PR no matter what! Just go out and have fun. I don't expect to make any great time either.

Feel better!

sorry you're still sick! Get better soon! I say run the 10 miler for fun unless the weather is horrible.

From the pros and cons list, seems like Little Rock wins!

I'm from Little Rock and I flew back there to do the half last year and it was great. The Shamrock looks really fun too though, I don't think you can make a bad choice out of those 2. Good Luck!

I'd SO go with the leprechauns.

I hope you feel better soon!

hope you get to feeling better soon! glad to see you're planning on being smart about the upcoming 10-miler and factoring in your cold and its effects on your runs. (i know it can be hard on race day to still hold back and not make it worse though). hang in there!

if you do both races, you'll truly be a "marathon maniac" (if you aren't one already?) but if you're gonna just do one, little rock would probably be my pick!

I think you should take it easy on yourself for the 10miler and see where you are next week and reassess your goals, but not put pressure on yourself!! And, I don't have any personal experience with the 2 marathons you picked. I know people that have run VA beach and it looked like fun with people dressed up in green and all, but don't know anything about the other one. Exciting options!!!

What is it with these lingering colds? I hope you're feeling better.
I say go with Little Rock, especially since you get a chance to see your family! I'm not sure if you were looking for votes, but I thought I'd share mine! :)

I can't believe you are still sick! That stinks!

Rest up and run the 10 miler for fun. Unless there is freezing rain. I wouldn't risk staying sick, especially with a a new marathon training schedule.

I have heard great things about the Shamrock Marathon. I would love to do that one someday.

I've heard good things about the Little Rock event too. Hope you feel better soon!

Sorry to hear you're still feeling sick. I am not familiar with either race, but I'll take hills over wind any day!

joyRuN said...

Hills or winds are yucky either way - so that cancels it out.

I like the thought of having a week off to relax after though - so I'm going for Little Rock :)

Ooh, choosing between races is exciting!

Sorry about your cold-- it DEFINITELY saps your energy and fitness. Take care of yourself.

My vote for Little Rock. I heard Bill Clinton might run in this one next year. Just kidding !

Have a Happy Holidays!

I had the same thing happen to me. I was over my cold and then it came back. SUCKS!

I vote for Little Rock since I'm a huge fan of chillaxing after a race.

Get well soon!

Those are two really good choices. FUN. Hope you feel better soon.

Oh come do the Olathe Marathon on March 29th in KS, it's way better than Arkansas and there should be a number of us bloggies there.. ok that was my little pitch..plus I have a discount code for registration, is this working?

Good luck chosing, I'm sure they would all be great really

I had been thinking of doing Little Rock before I got injured. I heard it's terrific!

Bummer that the DC one doesn't count. I'd love to meet up with you and that might've given me the incentive to run the half. :o)

Hope you feel better soon. Run the 10 if you feel better, but if you don't and it's raining, I'd give it a pass.

I was thinking of the Shamrock since it isn't too far from my house. However, I decided a later spring marathon would be better.

Good luck on the 10 miler, just have fun with it.

Frayed Laces said...

Ooh be careful in your race, especially if you've been feeling sick. Try to have fun?

Nitmos said...

Good Luck if you do Little Rock! My buddy (yes, I have one) lives there is always trying to get me to do that for the huge Flav-a-flav style medal. And he agrees that it is a challenging course.

in response to your comment on my post... it's a new gym called Snap Fitness. It's probably the same type of idea, but they're all over the US, and becoming more popular here. 3 opening in my area already!
